Come And Join Us At Atelier 88

Opening in July! Atelier 88 is a new and exciting creative space in the heart of rural Andalucia. Stay with us and enjoy a genuine encounter with authentic Spain. Situated between Granada (Alhambra) and Cordoba (historic Mezquita) Alcala La Real´s economy is based on olives – the precious liquid gold of olive oil is the back bone of this rural community. The bustling town has plenty of local shops, restaurants and bars, and a large market held every Tuesday. The town is surrounded by hills and olive groves and the majestic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada.  A less travelled destination boasting a rich mixture of culture, history, beautiful scenery and its very own  fairy tale castle. Our mission is to provide a retreat from the madding crowd, a place to be creative or just chill out and recharge the batteries.

Our lovingly restored traditional Spanish Arabic finca sits within a stones throw of ‘La Mota historic castle’ Alcala’s jewel in the crown perched high above the town. The house has 3 guest bedrooms, and two bathrooms, one en-suite. A beautiful courtyard garden and a large studio space.

Inspiring Creativity

The studio at Atelier 88 promotes creative well being by providing art courses with a difference.  We cater for all abilities. As well as painting and drawing, a special feature of our studio is Printmaking, taught by a master printmaker (Royal College Of Art) Our retreats aim to encourage people to reconnect with their creative universe. To be inspired by the beauty around us, to create a space away from the daily treadmill of surviving in an ever demanding world.
We provide art courses that cater for all abilities, as well as encouraging those who have yet to find their creative spirit. Our ethos is to inspire, challenge and create. To encourage a visual thinking centred on the premise that art can nurture personal transformation, seeing the world afresh through encounters with nature, culture and history. To be immersed in the visual landscape and discovering untapped energies within, is central to our vision of promoting a better understanding of ourselves through the restorative energies of making. Making art is a meditation on life, on nature, and the human presence in nature, ourselves as nature and not separated from it.

Our courses include Printmaking workshops (Silkscreen, etching, Linocut), Reflective making programmes such as ‘Creative Exercises for Well being’, ‘Botanical Art Sketchbooks’, ‘Transcribing Landscape’, ‘Spanish art and culture’, or courses tailored for group participation. Come and enjoy our hospitality and join us in our quest for a better world through art.

Come and be immersed in the wonder and colour of authentic Spain. Join us in good food and sunshine, enjoy talks and discussions over a bottle of wine and tapas, find your creative space in the olive groves with finca’s and cortijo’s, or be inspired by visiting the stunning castles and palaces. There is something for everyone in this magical corner of Spain.

As this summer is the launch of Atelier 88, please bear with us as we will be finding our feet! The Print studio won’t be fully set up until next spring. However, painting and drawing and linocut will be available and we will be on hand to advise and guide you through every stage.

For July, August and September 2016 the cost per day to include all meals, accommodation and expert tuition will be 80 euros per person. This special offer is only for this year.

If you just want a break and are looking for somewhere cosy and welcoming to stay then Atelier 88 offers the warmest of welcomes. Crisp cotton sheets, beautiful decor and a delicious breakfast. 50 euros per double room. Lunch and dinner can be requested at extra cost.

    1. Thank you Rod 🙂 October can be lovely and still quite warm. November is often quite cold, especially at night time but nothing compared to where you live! The gloomiest months here are January and February.

  1. As I would have expected, it sounds idyllic, exquisite. May visit later in the year for recuperation purposes (and because I’ve never been to Spain)! You and Puff Minor have surely set up something which is going to be an enormous success. If you’re taking bookings for 2016, you must have moved on apace since that video. Loving those tiles. xx

    1. Thank you dear Puff. its a leap of faith and I hope it will be a success. We are passionate about making it work and making a happy place where peeps will enjoy staying and making art. It’s certainly moved on from the last vid – still a way to go but the last part will go very fast and the builders should be done and dusted in about 4 weeks. We’d LOVE to see you xox

    1. Tickled that you love the name 🙂 It was a no brainer really – The house is number 88 and well, it’s going to be an atelier! I can’t wait to get cracking with the printmaking courses – wish we had all the kit now but it will be here soon. The REAL website for the business is under construction. Need photos and they can’t be taken until it is all finished, furnished and ready to rock! Roll on end of June. Can’t wait to show you the finished article and even better, for you both to come and stay xoxo

You deserve 5 stars for all your efforts in getting this wonderful venture up and running. Last time I looked at your video taking us through the renovations, all I saw were a forest of posts holding up an open roof. Bravo Lottie!

  6. Hey Lottie-o! I’ve never been drawn (heh-heh) to creative retreats. I go for the meditative, dig-deep-and-cry-a-lot variety! But this has enormous appeal! I found myself holding my breath to see what it would cost to spend a couple of weeks and shake loose my inner child! I wish you bounteous success and I know that will be the case. And maybe next year…?

  8. Super exciting Lottie, I wish you all the best for your launch. A wee desire is building to come to Spain for the Camino and whatnot, probably a long way off yet but should that manifest then I would love to come visit.

    1. Thank you, Hayley! We are almost finished, the end is in sight 🙂 and it is exciting – it’s been quite an experience. I really hope your Camino plans come to fruition. Walking the Camino is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I hope that I can manage it before I’m too old and doddery! Please visit us, I’d love to meet you xox

  9. Mercy, I don’t know if I ever got the WP notice for this post. I scrolled through and didn’t see my “handle” so here I am. The write up of what you and Pete are offering is super good. I know that you wrote that yourself but it’s every bit as good as a pro ad writer’s product.

I wish with all my heart that I could see your place in reality but that is not possible but I do enjoy reading all that you write and photograph. The pictures are all wonderful and very interesting. You achieved a remarkable transition and turned rumble and chaos into a beautiful home and art studio. You and Pete should be very proud.

I will get back to finishing that email and I hope soon. It’s just that my motivation is lacking. But again, I know that you understand.

    Yvonne xox

  10. I just happened to watch tv programme which featured your guest house. I have a house in Alcaldete and have plans to start printmaking again. Good news to hear that there are other creative people around. Hope to meet you soon. I defiantly need a refresh with some printing methods so once my house is ready I’ll apply to do a course!

    1. You are most welcome, Elaine. I know exactly what you mean about taking a break from painting walls! Sometimes building and renovation work can seem interminable. Time to pick up a different sort of paint brush and have some fun! Thanks for your lovely comment
